Spain

Spain is located on the Iberian Peninsula in southwestern Europe. With an area of 505,990 km2, Spain is the largest country in Southern Europe. By population, Spain is the sixth largest in Europe (46, million) and the fifth in the European Union. Spain’s capital and largest city is Madrid; other major urban areas include Barcelona, Valencia, Seville, Bilbao and Málaga. Its food is recognized as belonging to the “Mediterranean Diet” and school in all its territory provide food for students at a cost. The region of Catalonia, where the Learn4Health project is located, is considered a leader in health promotion initiatives. Cities like Barcelona and others have designed programs to actively encourage physical activity (e.g., bicycles lanes, parks, etc.), as well as the availability of fresh foods to its citizens (open markets).
